Writing
Workshops
The WRITING WORKSHOPS section of
The Electronic
Writing Course shows you how to edit whole documents. The Course
highlights the problems and then shows you step-by-step how the techniques you
have studied apply to documents sent out by government officials.
The
Electronic Writing Course offers five interactive Workshops. In each workshop
you can see the original example and then work through the changes of style,
usage and punctuation.

The
five workshops include:
Directive: This workshop looks at an Federal Aviation Administration
airworthiness directive sent out to airlines. We will see how concentrating on
the main information in the directive and using good layout can cut the length
by over 60 percent. The result is a much easier-to-follow document every
airline mechanic would appreciate from the industry regulator.
E-Mail: This workshop looks at an e-mail
from a Washington department to a regional office. Going through the workshop
will show you how concentrating on the key information the reader needs to know
and applying plain language principles can help cut down the paperwork by
two-thirds.
Memorandum:
Here's a memorandum written to government employees. It is a model of good
communication, being well thought out, clear, and specific. It shows you the
style you should adopt in every document.
Letter:This workshop looks at a standard
letter sent out by the Veterans Benefits Administration. We'll point out what's
wrong with the letter. Then, without editing it, we'll ask what information the
writer is trying to put across to the reader. Next, we'll look at the letter
redrafted into plain language. Finally, we'll look at ways to improve it
further.
News Report: Here's
a short extract written by a journalist. The style is good, informative and
clear. However, using the editing skills in this course means you can improve
even professional writing. If you read anything critically, you will find ways
to improve text.
